The Driverless Google Car is Here
Follow us at: www.trendguardian.com Ever dreamed of a car that could drive itself? Your personal autonomous taxi? That dream is nearer to reality than you think. Google is testing its new product, a driverless car, that came out of a Stanford team in a previous DARPA's Grand Challenge competition. Seven converted Toyota Prius' use laser range finders, cameras, radar, inertial sensors, and high-detail maps to autonomously drive while humans sit behind the wheel and monitor software. So far, Google's fleet of robotic cars have been driving itself around California and logged over 140000 miles. Combined with the ipad, another idea came about in Germany to work out autonomous taxis that you can summon using your iPad and uses GPS technology to bring the robot car directly to the location of your mobile device, and lets you track the cab. The Google driverless car is a project by Google that involves developing technology for driverless cars. The project is currently being led by Google engineer Sebastian Thrun, whose team at Stanford created the robotic vehicle Stanley which won the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge and its $2 million prize from the United States Department of Defense.
